Every light on every street.

Columns, lanterns, signals, cabinets and the feeder between them — 48,200 assets inventoried curb to curb across 1,240 km of kerb, each one placed to its chainage with a lux reading beside it.

THE STREET, AFTER DARK.

One governed pass down a high street at the hour the work is done: every column placed and every pool measured against its design, the failed feeder's dark lanterns logged to asset number, the lining gang caught mid-relay — then the unit walks the crossing at eye level while the leg comes back on, lantern by lantern.

The asset register says 46,000 columns. The street says something else, and the difference gets discovered one work order at a time.

An inventory that matches the street

A capture pass places every column, lantern, sign and feeder pillar on a georeferenced map, with chainage, 8.0 m mounting height, 24 m pitch and lamp type read straight off the frame.

Outages arrive by phone call. A dark lantern on a quiet feeder can stand out for six weeks before anyone bothers to dial.

Faults reported by the survey, not the resident

The night run logs every dark or under-performing lantern against its asset number, assigns it to the maintenance contractor and closes it on the record. Unplanned dark time is down 64% in the first year.

The capture program

The street is surveyed on its own two clocks — the daylight run that places every asset at its chainage, and the night run after 22:00 when the lamps are at full output and the light itself can be measured. Both land on one register.

  1. 01

    Kerbside survey run

Ward by ward, in daylight traffic

A vehicle run down the near lane places every column, lantern, signal, sign and feeder pillar on a georeferenced map — 8.0 m mounting height and 24.0 m pitch read straight off the frame, each asset addressed by number and chainage.

  2. 02

    Night photometric run

After 22:00, lamps at full output

Illuminance is mapped along the kerb while the lamps are at full output: CH 0+048 read 36 lx against a 40 lx design, and nine dark lanterns were logged to their asset numbers by 00:36. The contractor had the list before the depot opened.

Ask the record

  1. Q01

Our register says 46,000 columns. What does the street say?

48,200. The survey places every column, lantern, sign and feeder pillar at its chainage, with mounting height and lamp type read off the frame — including the 2,200 the register never met. The difference stops being discovered one work order at a time.

    REGISTER 46 000 · STREET 48 200 · Δ2 200
  2. Q02

Do we wait for a resident to phone in a dark lamp?

No. The night run logs every dark or under-performing lantern against its asset number — nine of them by 00:36 on the last run — and the maintenance contractor has the list before the depot opens at 07:15. Mean time to repair is 4.1 hours; unplanned dark time is down 64% in the first year.

    LOGGED 00:36 · LIST 07:15 · TTR 4.1H
  3. Q03

Is the street actually lit to design?

The lux profile along the kerb answers block by block: minimum 12 lx, uniformity 0.41 — and where it misses, it says where. CH 0+048 read 36 lx against a 40 lx design and went on the record with the frame behind it.

    U0 0.41 · MIN 12LX · 36LX AT CH 0+048
  4. Q04

How do we verify a 900-column claim without driving four wards?

Each billed line carries the frame that shows the new column standing at its chainage. Nine hundred claimed, nine hundred verified, side by side before the certificate is signed — and nobody drives anything.

  5. Q05

Can one record hold 27 wards?

48,200 assets across 1,240 km of kerb, every one addressed by asset number and chainage — column C12-03 on Elm Street answers to CH 0+048. The ward engineer, the contractor and the certificate all read the same register.
