The paperwork against the ground.
Contradiction detection is what happens when two independent accounts of the same site — the paperwork as filed, and the ground as measured — are held on one record and read against each other. The difference is stated in its own units, with both sources named, the error budget beside it and the evidence attached, in the week it appears rather than at handover.

What contradiction detection is
Two accounts of the same site, on one record.
Every other system on a site holds one half of the project. The documents hold what was claimed; the capture holds what was there. Held apart, a disagreement between them is a meeting. Held on one record, against one datum, it is arithmetic — a difference in units, with an error budget, two named sources and a date.
01 · PROGRESSThe monthly valuation
Pay application 07 claims line 14 at 80%. The same line measured 62% ±2 at epoch 41. Δ 18 percentage points, outside a ±3 pp budget.
02 · WORKFORCEThe labour bill
The muster roll for 12 March bills 41 crew. The count that morning was 26 ±2 across three work fronts. Δ 15 crew, outside a ±2 budget — read against the roll, never against a person.
03 · QUALITYThe closure
RFI-0047 was closed at a desk on 12 March. The walk on 19 March measured the condition still present at 2.1 mm ±0.2, wider by 0.3 mm than at epoch 11 — a closure that closes on capture would not have been signed.
04 · HANDOVERThe as-built
The issued as-built puts the drain run on the grid line. The capture taken before the wall closed puts it 240 mm ±15 off it. Δ 240 mm against a ±25 mm tolerance, answered now rather than by the first person to drill there.
One half is a document
A pay application, a muster roll, a closed request, an issued as-built: each is somebody's account of the work, typed at a moment and filed. It is not wrong for being typed. It is unattached — there is nothing under the figure except the person who wrote it and the day they wrote it.
PAPER · AS FILED · NOTHING ATTACHEDThe other half is measured
The same work read off the site itself, on the cadence the site is captured at: a quantity with its unit, its ±, and the date it was that way. It carries what it was read from, so anyone can go back to the evidence rather than to the argument.
GROUND · ± STATED · EVIDENCE ATTACHEDThe difference is arithmetic
Two accounts of one thing, on one record, against one datum. Subtract them and what is left is a number with a unit — either inside the error budget, where nothing is said at all, or outside it, where a reading is raised with both sources on it.
Δ · INSIDE OR OUTSIDE THE BUDGETA reading states a difference and stops.
Nothing is raised inside the error budget — a difference smaller than what the instruments resolve is not a difference.
The units are the register's own: points of a valuation, crew on a shift, millimetres on a wall, millimetres off a grid line.
Where the difference sits against a labour bill, it is read against the roll and the gang, never against a person.
RAISED OUTSIDE BUDGET · STATED · STOPPEDWhere contradictions cost money
Four moments where the difference is money.
A disagreement between the paperwork and the ground costs nothing while nobody is paying against it. These are the four moments somebody is — the valuation, the labour bill, the closure and the handover. Each one is a place a number leaves the building.
- The monthly valuationPAY APP CLAIMED 80% ▸ MEASURED 62% ±2
A pay application is a claim about how much of the work stands. It is certified by somebody who cannot be on every floor in the week the certificate is due, so the figure gets negotiated rather than measured. When the claim arrives with the measured quantity already beside it, certification is a signature instead of a fortnight, and what is certified is what stands.
VALUATION · CERTIFIED AGAINST MEASURED WORK- The labour billROLL 41 CREW ▸ COUNTED 26 ±2
Labour is billed off a roll written by hand at the end of a shift. The count is what stood on the work fronts that morning. Read against each other at gang level, the two settle the bill in the week it is raised rather than at the final account — and everybody on the roll is paid for measured work.
BILL · GANG LEVEL · NEVER A PERSON- The closureRFI CLOSED ▸ 2.1 MM ±0.2 PRESENT
A request closed at a desk and a condition still on the wall are two states of the same wall. A closure that closes on capture cannot be signed while the condition is measurable, so nothing is carried forward as closed that the next walk reopens. What is avoided is the second visit, the second scaffold, and the argument about when it was known.
CLOSES ON CAPTURE · NOT ON A STATUS FIELD- The handoverDRAWN ON GRID ▸ 240 MM ±15 OFF
An as-built is worth what it is accurate to. Where the issued drawing and the capture made before the wall closed disagree, the difference is on the record with the date it was measured — so the drilling, the retrofit and the liability claim years later all argue from a measurement instead of from a drawing nobody went back to.
AS-BUILT · MEASURED BEFORE CLOSURE
How it gets settled
A meeting can agree an action. It cannot measure the work.
Two people who disagree about a quantity go on disagreeing until somebody measures it, and a meeting that ends without a measurement ends in an action that comes back next month wearing the same clothes. A reading arrives with the measurement already in it — which is why it can be answered, re-measured or dismissed on the day, and why the answer stays answered.

The line is revised against the reading and certified at the measured figure. The revision carries the date it was made and the epoch it was made against, so the valuation that goes out is the one that can be re-read in five years.
REVISION · DATED · TIED TO EPOCH 41- 02Re-measured
A fresh capture is asked for, because a fortnight-old epoch is a fair thing to argue with. If the new value lands inside the budget the reading closes — and both values stay on the record, because the first one was true when it was made.
NEW EPOCH · BOTH VALUES KEPT- 03Dismissed
Somebody with the authority to dismiss it does, in one line, and the dismissal is recorded with their name and the date. The reading does not disappear; it is answered. That is the only place a person's name appears in any of this.
DISMISSAL · NAMED · DATED · KEPT
The record settles what a meeting adjourns.
The difference is already dated when the meeting opens, so nobody has to reconstruct the week from memory.
The decision is itself an entry — answered, re-measured or dismissed — so it does not get taken twice.
Nobody is named in a reading except the person who dismisses it.

- 01What is contradiction detection in construction?
- It is what happens when two independent accounts of the same site — the paperwork as filed, and the ground as measured — are held on one record and read against each other. Where they disagree by more than the error budget, the difference is stated in its own units, with both sources named and dated and the evidence attached, in the week it appears rather than at handover.
- 02What happens when the paperwork and the site disagree?
- Where the paperwork and the ground disagree, you hear it the same week — not at handover. You are told, with both accounts side by side, the difference in units and the budget it was read against. What to do about it stays your decision: the reading can be answered, re-measured or dismissed, and all three are recorded.
- 03How do you know the measurement is right and the paperwork is wrong?
- We do not, and the record never says so. A reading states a difference between two sources, each carrying its own date and its own uncertainty. Which one to act on is a judgement the people who own the job make; the record's part is to stop the difference being invisible until it is expensive.
- 04What is an error budget, and why does it matter?
- It is the difference the instruments cannot resolve, stated in advance. Nothing inside it is ever raised, because a difference smaller than the tolerance is noise, and a record that cries wolf gets switched off. An installed-quantity reading runs to about ±2–3 percentage points; a crack width to ±0.2 mm.
- 05Is this about finding out who was wrong?
- No. There is no verdict in a reading and no vocabulary for one — a difference, its units, its budget, its two sources. Nobody is named except the person who dismisses it, and a labour reading is read against the roll and the gang rather than against any individual.
- 06How soon does a difference surface?
- In the week it appears, on the cadence the site is captured at — most sites settle on weekly. That is the whole economics of it: the same difference found in week 32 is a revision, and found at the final account it is a claim.
- 07What can be read against what?
- Anything the record holds both halves of: a valuation against installed quantity, a roll against a count, a closure against a condition, an issued drawing against what was built, a delivery note against what was placed. The pairs grow as the record does.
- 08Do we have to change how our teams work?
- No. The applications, the rolls, the requests and the drawings keep being filed exactly as they are filed. The other half is the capture the site is already making. Contradiction detection is what happens once both halves land in the same record.
The only platform that holds both the paperwork and the ground.
