Ground Reality

EVERY ACRE, ACCOUNTED.

Four thousand eight hundred hectares under fourteen pivots, and a season that gives you one week to act on anything you find. Ground Reality flies the whole scheme every week at 1.8 cm detail, reads vigour as a measurement instead of a windscreen impression, and puts the canal, the crop and the machine that waters it on the same record.

EVERY ACRE, ACCOUNTED.

One dawn pass down Scheme 03: a centre pivot losing six hectares to a blocked span, a main canal at full supply with four offtakes set, eight stocked ponds, a mill taking grain — then the unit walks the levee and measures the bund that is quietly costing the block forty millimetres a day.

The agronomist covers what the ute can reach before lunch, which is the headlands and the blocks beside the road. The far corner of block F-06 gets looked at when somebody happens to be over that way, and by then the week that mattered is gone.

The whole scheme, on a schedule

Missions fly the scheme to a standing weekly schedule — twenty-two sheets, three sorties, same lines every flight — so this week's map lands beside last week's without anybody deciding which blocks were worth the drive.

Crop stress is an argument between two people looking at the same paddock from different ends of it. By the time it is obvious from the cab, the difference between the good half and the bad half is already in the yield.

    Vigour measured, not eyeballed

Every block is flown for RGB and near-infrared on the same pass and mapped at 1.8 cm detail, so a wedge, a strip or a corner reads as an area and a stage against the rest of the block — this week, while a set of the irrigation can still be changed.

The tail-end gate goes short every February and the reason is always somebody else's — silt, a slumped bank, an offtake left cracked open. A 2.4 m³/s channel does not owe you a grade you have never measured.

The canal, and the fall it lives on

The canal is surfaced along its length as a terrain model: invert, bank and freeboard against design, with the silt volume between two surveys sitting on the same sheet as the fall it is killing. Desilting is quoted on a volume, not a hunch.

The capture program

The program runs on the season's clock — one flight a week, every week, because anything the map finds is only worth acting on for about a week. Nothing on this list waits for somebody to decide a block is worth the drive.

  1. 01

    Scheme flight

Weekly, 3 sorties, same lines every flight

The whole scheme is flown to a standing schedule — twenty-two sheets, armed at 06:40 and a map by 09:15 — so this week's map lands beside last week's, block for block, headland to far corner.

    Pivot heat pass

Every flight, over the fourteen pivots

Canopy temperature reads span by span under each circle. Pivot 07's dry wedge from 118° to 164° read as 6.2 ha of stress against 47.1 under the pivot — a seized gearbox on span 5, not a failing crop.

Soil moisture lands on the same record as the imagery above it, so a stressed wedge on the map is read against the water actually in the ground — and the water table sitting 2.4 m under the root zone.

Ask the record

  1. Q01

Who decides which blocks get flown?

Nobody — that is the point. The mission flies the whole 4,800 ha to a standing weekly schedule, three sorties on the same lines every flight, fifty-two weeks a year. The far corner of F-06 gets the same look as the block beside the road.

    WEEKLY · 3 SORTIES · 52×/YR
  2. Q02

How fast is a flight a map I can act on?

The weekly flight arms at 06:40 and the map is up by 09:15 — two hours and thirty-five minutes — with vigour by block and stage against the rest of the field, in time to change a set of the irrigation the same day.

    ARMED 06:40 · MAP UP 09:15 · 2H35M
  3. Q03

Is vigour a measurement or an opinion?

A measurement: near-infrared and RGB on the same pass at 1.8 cm detail, mapped block by block against growth stage. A wedge, a strip or a corner reads as an area and a stage — not as an argument between two people at opposite ends of a paddock.

CROP VIGOUR · 1.8CM DETAIL · STAGE BY BLOCK
  4. Q04

    What has it actually caught?

A seized span-5 gearbox on pivot 07, sometime Sunday night. The dry wedge from 118° to 164° was on the 09:15 map, the pivot was turning again by 16:20, and the damage stayed at 6.2 ha instead of 47.1.

    PIVOT 07 · 6.2 HA · TURNING 16:20
  5. Q05

The tail-end gate goes short every February — can you tell me why?

The canal is surfaced end to end: invert against the 58.40 design, banks, freeboard at FSL 61.20, and the silt volume between two surveys sitting beside the fall it is killing. Desilting gets quoted on a measured volume, not a hunch.

    CANAL 2.4M³/S · INVERT 58.40 · FSL 61.20
  6. Q06

Can I hold this week against last week?

Same lines every flight, so the maps difference cleanly: fifty-two captures a year stack block by block, and a drift in any field reads against its own history instead of somebody's memory of it.
